Skipper's Choice. First race of the season

Well, the SEAS BBQ and Swap Meet went off very well with a few new skippers and crew showing up for the event.  There were 4 tables full of items for sale or giveaway with a few people taking home new treasures!  Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!  We'd like to see the swap meet expand in coming years to include sailors, power boaters and commercial fishing vessels participating.

Saturday nights' events were followed on Sunday by the first race of the season:  The Skippers Choice race, with three possible routes;  Grand Island, Jaw Point up the Taku River basin, or Pt. Hilda on the backside of Douglas Island.  Because there was some wind at the start, the skippers elected to go around Grand Island.  Here's a report, filed by Jimmy Mahan on Loa'a Nalu:

"A steady 10 knot breeze  launched the 2013 SEAS Cup sail boat race series with 4 boats at the start off Marmion Island.  With  a dense fog lifting,  a pleasant reach to Point Arden found the fleet still in close quarters and the wind  dropping to the low side of 5 knots.  Most of the fleet took a counter clockwise  approach to Grand Island and Surprise emerged from the rounding with a considerable and growing lead. Natalya scratched short of Grand and Sound Discovery joined Loa’a Nalu fighting the tide change looking for wind. After a radio exchange the crew of Sound Discovery  decided  to  scratched just 20 minutes too soon. The wind finally filled in from the south pushing Loa’a Nalu at hull speed over the  finish line  off Marmion Island."

Race results and pictures will be on the SEAS website within the next day or two.  Our next race is over the Memorial Day weekend, the Jay Ginter Memorial Day race.
